In times of uncertainty, many of us look for ways to be more mindful, to calm anxiety stress, so alternative therapies like crystal healing are coming to the fore. The concept of using crystals to heal has been around for centuries but, with celebrities such as Victoria Beckham speaking openly about their belief in the practice, it's had a more mainstream resurgence in recent years.
We spoke to experts in the field to find out everything a beginner needs to know...
What is crystal healing?
Crystal healing is a type of alternative therapy that involves using gemstones to bring balance to an individual's life and mind. Crystals are said to "have a stable and unchanging energy pattern, each with a unique frequency and energy field, or resonance" that gives them special properties, explains Judy Hall, in her work, The Little Book of Crystals. As a result, "they act like tuning forks," helping bring "harmony" to the "very unstable energy field of the human body".
The benefits of crystals
The proposed healing benefits of crystals predominantly surround areas of mental wellbeing; including feelings of increased tranquility, positivity and focus, as well as enhanced immunity and pain relief.
Individual crystals are also known to have their own special energies that align to different areas of your life, with their shape and colour - as well as their type - affecting their influence.
THE BENEFITS OF CRYSTAL THERAPY
Crystal therapy has been used for centuries to help treat the body holistically for various ailments and the use of these beautiful minerals dates back to Egyptian times when they were said to be used to purge ‘evil spirits.’
These days, thanks to celebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Ella Woodward, Madonna and Katy Perry promoting the benefits, crystal therapy has shrugged off its ‘hippy’ image and has gained a much bigger following from those looking to heal their body naturally and ensure all round wellbeing.
The belief behind crystal therapy is that individual stones such as amethyst, rose quartz and jade have the ability to communicate with the energy flow of the human body and help to realign the energy channels that are interrupting the natural flow of the body and help it heal itself. Crystals with specific stones are said to help to relieve specific ailments such as anxiety, depression and insomnia, or more physical ailments such as digestive problems.
Crystal therapy can be as simple as wearing precious stones and minerals as bracelets and necklaces, placing crystals in the room where you work and sleep or being treated by a crystal therapist, who can identify which stones can work to stimulate the seven chakras, or ‘energy points’ around the body.
The electromagnetic charge within each stone is said to offer healing vibrations as they work to remove blockages around the body and restore a natural flow of energy.
The celebrity obsession
Some of the celebrity who obsessed with the crystal therapy.
The singer has been open with her battle with stage fright before shows and is frequently quoted talking about her use of crystals to calm her nerves.
Miranda Kerr quite literally keeps her crystals close to heart. In an interview with us, she revealed she keeps a rose quartz in her handbag and in her bra.
The actor and dancer embraces a wide range of alternative therapies calling herself 'a hippie at heart'. She has previously posted photos on Instagram showing her massive collection of crystals, as well as of her experimenting with the Chinese practice of cupping (said to encourage blood flow).
When travelling, the supermodel is said to keep black tourmaline and a rose quartz in her bag as symbols of protection and love.
Victoria Beckham told Allure that she travels with her crystals because she's "quite a superstitious person", and reportedly uses them backstage at her shows. "I've got all different colours," she said.
The science behind healing crystals:
When one talks about the world of alternate therapies, the usage of healing crystals probably tops the list.
For the uninitiated, crystals (fossilized minerals) are believed to contain several healing properties. From bringing peace to the mind to fighting depression, the list seems to be endless. A lot of celebrities are using them and vouching for their efficacy. They have also been used in ancient forms of medicine and by priests to align the body chakras. And now, using crystals as an effective form of practicing self-care is becoming incredibly popular.
Scientifically, there is no science backing to the power of crystal healing in treating or curing conditions. However, using healing crystals can be very relaxing as they induce a sense of relaxation in the environment. But, do they actually work in treating medical conditions? We tell you
How do they work?
According to experts, crystals act as a power hold for healing as they allow positive, fruitful energy to flow into the body and do away with the negative, toxic energy. Like other forms of alternative therapy, crystals work by channelizing your energy levels, thereby, focus on healing your body from the inside.
Crystals also carry the power to induce a placebo effect in the body, which is scientifically proven to help medical treatment.
These healing rocks and crystals have their particular vibration and frequency, which arise from their molecular composition. From the way they move and interact, these vibrations and energies work in benefiting and uplifting our mood, mind, and health in a considerable manner, often in the way essential oils and aromatherapy work. Acting like a magnet, it can absorb the negative energies and welcome fresh vibes.
Since they are all naturally extracted, they harness the energies of the sun, moon, and oceans (all-natural healing energies) to improve our state. When you place or hold a crystal over the body, it interacts with the body's chakras and promotes physical and mental wellness. Used in a certain way, it can also improve your concentration and creativity. It can also promote physical, emotional and spiritual cleansing.
Crystals vibrate at the same pitch as humans and maximize the healing abilities we already have. Because of this comforting feeling, when you place a crystal on the body, it helps you connect better and feel at ease. Balancing crystals can also help match the misaligned energy levels.
How to use them? Which stone is the best?
Each healing crystal carries its own properties and powers. Depending on their benefits, you can use a healing rock to naturally heal yourself and remove stress and negativity. Some of the most commonly used stones include amethyst, rhodonite, opal, and rose quartz.
Amethyst has been found to hold powers which are extremely beneficial for the intestines and digestive troubles. Stones like green aventurine is good to promote cardiac wellness while healing rocks like yellow topaz clear up mental blocks and provide clarity.
